THE FLIGHT LINE DISTRICT
A vision for connection, revitalization, and movement through Dayton.
The Flight Line is a proposed multi-use trail and redevelopment corridor that would transform an unused rail line into a community asset. The project has been described as a way to connect Dayton neighborhoods, close gaps in the regional trail network, and create new opportunities for recreation, mobility, and investment along the corridor.
What Is the Flight Line?
The Flight Line is a proposed rails-to-trails project centered on an abandoned rail corridor running from just east of downtown Dayton through East Dayton and south toward Kettering. Plans have described the corridor as roughly 6.5 miles long, with the goal of turning it into a shared-use path for walking, biking, and neighborhood connectivity.
This vision goes beyond a trail alone. It has also been discussed as a catalyst for neighborhood improvement, better access to existing regional bike infrastructure, and future development opportunities along the route.
Why It Matters?
The Flight Line has been presented as an opportunity to:
-
reconnect neighborhoods to downtown and the broader regional trail system
-
create safer, more accessible options for walking and biking
-
encourage long-term reinvestment in surrounding properties and districts
-
support a more connected and active Dayton region

Current Status
The Flight Line has received public attention and funding support over the years, including $1.5 million in federal earmark funding intended to help with acquisition of the rail corridor.
However, as of July 2025, reporting indicated the project had stalled because negotiations over the abandoned rail line became more difficult after Norfolk Southern significantly increased its asking price for the property.
The Flight Line remains an important long-term vision for Dayton. While acquisition and implementation involve multiple public and private stakeholders, the project continues to represent a major opportunity for connectivity, revitalization, and future investment in the corridor.

Our Interest in the Corridor
Our interest in the Flight Line centers on the future of the surrounding corridor and the impact this kind of transformational infrastructure can have on nearby neighborhoods, properties, and long-term community growth. Projects like this can shape how people move, gather, invest, and experience Dayton for years to come.
Looking Ahead
The Flight Line represents a bigger idea for Dayton: turning underused infrastructure into something active, connective, and valuable. Whether through trail access, neighborhood enhancement, or corridor reinvestment, the vision points toward a more connected future for the city.
